Blurry Glass for texture in 3Ds Max, how to do it?

Do you know when you’re going to create a 3D scene with a winter or damp mood? It’s important to pay attention to every detail. For example, in reality, it’s difficult for windows under these weather conditions to remain completely smooth.

Typically, what happens is that temperature changes cause the windows to become foggy in the environment.

For this reason, if you want to increasingly bring a sense of realism to the images, it’s interesting to replicate effects in the model, such as the effect of fogged glass!

1- Edit and create the base image of the texture in Photoshop!

For that, just:

  • Open Photoshop and create a new file with the size 2,000 x 2,000 pixels, this size is for the image to have a good resolution.
  • Select the brush tool and increase its size for a more natural painting.
  • Select black color for painting.
  • Paint the edges of the image in a more random way so that the texture is as natural as possible, as shown in the video below:
What you want is for the edges of the frame to be blurred, so we’re going around the edges just to cause this effect.
  • That’s it, just export your image as a JPEG, and you’ll already have the texture base.

2- Now let’s finish the edition inside 3Ds Max:

  • With the Glass texture open, let’s change the reflection bar
  • In Glossiness we will add a corona bitmap
  • In corona bitmap you must select the map image we created earlier.
  • Still inside the corona bitmap, let’s add a corona color correct.
  • With corona color correct you can change the gamma, contrast and brightness as you like.
  • Ready! You will have the glass with fogged effect!
Watch this step by step in the video!

3- See the result of the effect!

Glass without the fog effect
Glass with the blurred effect

This is a simple way to make adjustments to the materials as the temperature changes in the environment, in this case a humid forest.
