3D- Composition rules, how they improve a scene!

It is not known exactly why, but our brain tends to familiarize itself with certain visual patterns. There are many composition rules that can help in the rendering of a 3D image. In this blog, we will exemplify each one so that you understand, and we will also give you a bonus tip of a script to help you visualize this in your projects!

1 – Golden Ratio

The golden ratio in 3D is based on creating a central point within the composition. It is present in many things in nature itself!

2 – Frame

Framing the 3D with elements we want to focus on is also a great strategy to create images, in this case, the focus is the house, and the tree in front of it creates a framing effect.

3 – Symmetry

They don’t need to be identical, but the sides of the image should be very similar, both vertically and horizontally.

5 – 3D Golden Triangle

Diagonal lines can also create this harmony in the image!

5 – 3D Guide Line

The elements are directed towards the focus of the photo, such as in this case, the boy.

4 – Rule of thirds

Dividing the image into three parts in width and height and focusing on interesting points of the image at the intersection points.

6 – 3D Horizontal Lines

One basic rule is horizontal lines, composing in a way that everything stays aligned.

6 – 3D Entering the Scene

The idea is to place an object directed from left to right, entering the scene, where there is more space in front of it than behind, forcing the viewer’s gaze throughout the image.

These are just some of the countless composition rules, and by being aware of them, we can position our camera in a way that incorporates them and pleases the viewer’s eye!

For those who use the 3Ds Max software for modeling, here’s a valuable tip!

Download the Image Composition Helper script! It’s a free extension that resides within 3Ds Max to assist you in image composition. Search for it on Google, and you can download it directly from the Evermotion website. As my recommendation, all you have to do is:

1- Click on the Download link for the 3D plugin
2- Open this page and in code, download the zip for 3D

After that you can unzip the folder and open your 3Dsmax to run the script.

Within the Script 3Dsmax select run script.
It will open to search for the folder where the file you downloaded is located, look for imagecomphelper and open the 3D software.
It will open this overlay where you can select and deselect the 3D compositing rule you want to visualize on top of your scene.
This way you can position the objects in your 3D scene in any alignment you want!
