Relink Bitmap: what is it for and how to install it in 3Ds Max?

The “relink bitmap” is a feature found in some image editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop. This function is used to update the location of a bitmap image file that has been imported into an editing project but has been moved or renamed since then.

When a bitmap image file is imported into an editing project, the editing software creates a link to the original file. If the original file is moved or renamed, the link can break, which can cause issues for the editing project, such as displaying an error message or showing the missing image.

In such cases, the relink bitmap allows the user to update the location of the original image file, reconnecting it to the editing project and enabling the image to be displayed correctly. This function can be very useful in avoiding problems when working with image editing projects that involve the import of multiple different bitmap files.

And to use? Too easy:

Watch the video below and see that when attempting to apply the wood texture to the object, 3Ds Max is unable to find the texture maps (the images) on the computer! This is because these maps were probably moved to a different folder or deleted.

With the use of Relink, you can find all these maps again and update them all at once, instead of one by one, which makes it easier and saves time!

Shift + T you see all the missing textures in the file!

Here is the step by step description:

  • When clicking the Relink Bitmap top bar icon, click Close on the Donate box.
  • Under Search Directory, click Browse and find the folder with the textures you want to load in place of the missing ones.
  • Click on Relink and it will execute this command.
  • Ready! All textures will be replaced automatically.
